Elehear Beyond 2 Pro vs. Prescription Hearing Aids: Who Should Choose Which in 2026

Elehear's $799 Beyond 2 Pro adds Auracast and translation. See what OTC can and cannot do next to fitted hearing aids, and who should test first.

Elehear launched the Beyond 2 Pro on September 22, 2026. It is a rechargeable receiver-in-canal hearing aid sold directly by the company for $799 a pair, aimed at adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss and sold without a prescription. It adds Auracast support, a new generation of speech processing and face-to-face translation in the app. For many of our Westchester and Greenwich patients, the question is not whether it is clever. It is whether $799 and an app can do the work of a fitted hearing aid.

Our short answer is that it can be a sensible first step for some people and the wrong one for many others. This guide gives you a way to decide. We start with what Elehear says the device does, label every performance number as a company claim, and then walk through the three questions that matter more than any spec. We do not sell Elehear devices, and no independent lab has published results for this model yet, so we rank nothing.

“The spec sheet tells you what the device can do. A hearing test tells you what your ears need. You want both before you spend $799.”

What the Beyond 2 Pro offers on paper

Everything here comes from Elehear or from trade press covering the launch. The processing is called VOCCLEAR 3.0. It builds on Elehear's deep neural network noise reduction and adds a feature aimed at competing voices. Auracast support lets the aids receive compatible public Bluetooth broadcasts, though public coverage is still limited. The app offers bass, midrange and treble sliders in 1 dB steps across plus or minus 8 dB, plus real-time AI translation for face-to-face conversation, in 20 languages according to HearingTracker. Each aid weighs about 4.3 grams, has an IP67 rating, and uses user-replaceable receivers in several lengths. Optional ElePro Plus remote audiology costs $99 a session. Elehear also reports a 39 percent improvement in speech understanding in very noisy conditions and feedback suppression that responds 32 percent faster, both against its previous generation and both from internal testing. Treat those as company claims until a lab repeats them.

What is independent and what is not

HearingTracker and its lab partner HearAdvisor have said they have not yet published test results for the Beyond 2 Pro. Elehear's earlier Beyond Pro did score well in HearAdvisor's lab, with a SoundScore of 4.8 out of 5, according to HearingTracker. That is useful background on the company's engineering. It is also a different device, and a lab score describes performance in a standard test, not what you will hear in your own kitchen. We will update this page when Beyond 2 Pro results appear.

The Beyond 2 Pro and prescription hearing aids side by side

The table sets the Beyond 2 Pro next to a prescription hearing aid fitted in a clinic. The middle column comes from Elehear and press coverage. The last column describes how a fitted device is handled, and we show no price for it because prices vary by device and clinic.

Three questions that decide it

First, what does your hearing test show? Over-the-counter hearing aids are built for perceived mild to moderate loss in adults, and the word perceived matters, because nobody confirms the degree of your loss before you buy. A hearing test does. It also shows whether your ears differ and whether you understand speech clearly or only hear it louder. Second, what is your hardest listening moment? If it is a quiet dinner for two, a self-fit device may be enough to try. If it is a loud restaurant, a family table or a work meeting, ask how the device is tuned and checked for that moment, because noise is where precision matters most and where listening effort builds. Third, who adjusts it when it is wrong? Every hearing aid needs fine-tuning in the first weeks. With an over-the-counter device the answer is you, the app and remote support where it exists. With a fitted device it is a person who has measured your ear.

When an over-the-counter first try is reasonable

A first try can make sense if your loss feels mild to moderate and about equal in both ears, you are comfortable with phone apps, budget is the main barrier, and nothing on the red-flag list below applies. Do three things first. Get a baseline hearing test, so you know what you are working with. Ask about the return window and warranty before you pay, because we did not find either in the launch coverage we reviewed. Keep your receipt and your test results in case you move to a fitted device later. Hearing help that you actually wear beats hearing help you keep postponing.

When prescription care tends to win

Start with a professional evaluation if one ear is worse than the other, if tinnitus bothers you, if you hear people but cannot make out the words, if you have tried over-the-counter devices and still struggle, or if your loss is more than mild to moderate. The same goes for ear pain, drainage, dizziness or a sudden change, which are medical questions before they are hearing aid questions. The FDA also says over-the-counter hearing aids are for adults 18 and older, so children and teens need a professional evaluation. Prescription fitting adds a measured result: your audiologist programs from your audiogram, checks the output in your ear, and adjusts over follow-up visits. Our guides to why real-ear verification matters and what to expect at a hearing aid fitting explain that process.

Auracast at $799: a sober note

Auracast lets hearing devices receive public broadcast audio in venues that install it, and that list is still short. Before you pay for the feature, ask where you would use it. Our guides explain what Auracast is and how it works and what the first US theater going live means. We also compare this fall's new flagship hearing aids, which all list Auracast, in our roundup of five new AI hearing aids.

The Westchester angle: remote care and local follow-up

Elehear launched ElePro Plus on August 17, 2026 in nine states, and Hearing Review's list did not include New York or Connecticut. Hearing Health Matters later reported 24 states as of September 9, but we could not find that list, so confirm with Elehear before you count on remote sessions from Westchester or Greenwich. Local follow-up is a separate question. If you already own an over-the-counter device, call us with the make and model. Whether we can adjust it depends on the model, and our guide to programming hearing aids bought somewhere else explains what to expect. If you are weighing a quote or a device you own, a hearing aid second opinion at our Harrison or Somers office is built for that.

Medical information notice

This page is for information only and is not medical advice. Over-the-counter hearing aids do not suit everyone, and a hearing evaluation is the way to find out what suits you. Audiology Associates of Westchester does not sell Elehear devices.

Common questions

Is the Elehear Beyond 2 Pro as good as a prescription hearing aid?

Nobody can say yet, because no independent lab has published results for it. It can be a reasonable first step for mild to moderate loss, but it is self-fit, and the launch coverage we reviewed describes no real-ear verification. A prescription fitting adds a measured result that an app cannot replace.

Can I bring an Elehear to an audiologist for adjustments?

Call us with the make and model before you book. Whether we can adjust an over-the-counter device depends on the model and its software. We can always test your hearing and tell you whether the device matches your results.

Is the Beyond 2 Pro FDA approved?

It is sold as an over-the-counter hearing aid, a category the FDA created in 2022 for adults with perceived mild to moderate loss. The launch coverage we reviewed does not describe the product's FDA filing, so check Elehear's materials and the FDA's device databases before you buy.

Will Auracast work where I live?

Only in venues that have installed it, and public coverage is still limited. Ask yourself where you would use it before you pay for it. Our Auracast guides list what has gone live so far.

Is $799 a good price for hearing aids?

It is a price per pair for a self-fit device, and it does not include a hearing test, in-person fitting or follow-up visits. Prescription prices vary widely by device and clinic. Our hearing aid cost guide for Westchester County explains what a fitted price covers.

Who should not start with an over-the-counter hearing aid?

Anyone under 18, and anyone with sudden hearing loss, hearing clearly worse in one ear, ear pain or drainage, dizziness, or ringing in one ear, should get an evaluation first. The same goes if you cannot follow speech in a quiet room.
