Reviewing a hearing test and hearing aid quote with an audiologist

A second opinion means a Doctor of Audiology looks at your hearing test, your hearing aid quote, or the hearing aids you wear now, and tells you what they see. You do not have to be unhappy with your first provider to ask for one. Many people simply want to be sure before they spend money or keep struggling with devices that do not help.

We offer second opinions at our Harrison and Somers offices. You will leave with a clear answer in plain words, and you decide what to do next. There is no pressure to switch providers or to buy anything from us.

“A second opinion does not judge your first provider. Often it confirms the original advice, and we will tell you so.”

When a second opinion makes sense

Some common reasons are a quote that feels too high or too hard to compare, a recommendation you do not fully understand, hearing aids that still do not help after several adjustment visits, or a provider who has not measured the fit in your ear canal. People also ask when a hearing test result seems different from how they hear every day, when they are told they have no hearing loss but still struggle, or when someone suggests a device they did not expect.

What to bring

Bring any recent hearing test results, the written quote or purchase agreement, and the hearing aids you wear now, with their chargers and any domes or molds. Bring a list of the situations where you struggle most, such as restaurants, meetings or the phone. Bring the name of the provider, and their trial and return terms, if you still have them. A family member or friend can also help describe how your hearing affects daily life.

What we check

The table below shows what we look at in each situation. Your audiologist tells you which of these apply to you. We may repeat parts of your hearing test if your results are old or if something does not match how you hear.

What a second opinion does not do

A second opinion does not judge your first provider. Often it confirms the original advice, and we will tell you so. It does not replace medical care. If we find signs that need a physician, such as sudden hearing loss, one-sided hearing loss, drainage or significant ear pain, we will tell you to see a doctor promptly. We also cannot promise that a different device will fix every problem, and we will not promise a result that your hearing test does not support.

What it costs

Fees and what the visit includes depend on what you need, such as a review of paperwork only, a repeat hearing test, or a check of your hearing aids. Please ask us about the fee and about insurance when you book, so you know before you come in. If you were quoted a price elsewhere, our guides on hearing aid cost and insurance in Westchester can help you compare it fairly.

What happens next

After your visit, you can take our findings back to your first provider, stay with them, or move your care. If you decide to continue with us, we will explain the options and the costs in writing. Call our Harrison office at (914) 949-0034 or our Somers office at (914) 556-6720 to book a second opinion visit.

Common questions

Do I need to tell my current audiologist that I want a second opinion?

No. You can book a visit on your own. Many people ask their first provider for a copy of their hearing test and quote, which helps us compare. Your records belong to you, and you can ask for them.

Can you review a quote from another provider or from Costco?

Yes. Bring the written quote. We look at the device, what is included, and how the care is set up, so you can compare it fairly. We tell you what we see and leave the decision to you.

My hearing aids are not helping. Can you check them?

Yes. Bring them with their chargers and parts. Your audiologist checks the devices, the fit in your ear, and whether the settings match your hearing test. In many cases, adjustments or reprogramming can help. If the devices are not the right fit for your hearing, we tell you.

Will you tell me my hearing aids were a bad choice?

We will tell you what we see, in plain words. Often the original advice was sound, and we say so. If something does not match your hearing test, we explain what and why.

Do I have to buy hearing aids from you after a second opinion?

No. There is no obligation. You can take the findings back to your first provider or stay where you are.

What does a second opinion visit cost?

It depends on what you need, such as a review of paperwork, a repeat hearing test or a device check. Ask us about the fee and about insurance when you call to book.
