If you bought a Sony over-the-counter hearing aid, or you were about to, the news can feel unsettling. Sony's U.S. website now lists all three of its OTC hearing aids as no longer available. HearingTracker reported this on April 17, 2026, after the listings had been marked that way for months. At Audiology Associates of Westchester, we see patients in Harrison and Somers who bought OTC aids and then wondered who would help them. This page gives a plain plan for owners and for buyers.

What happened

“The Sony news is a reminder to ask who will support a hearing aid after the sale. A hearing test shows what you need first.”

Sony sold the CRE-C10, the CRE-E10 and the CRE-C20. WS Audiology, one of the large hearing aid manufacturers, built them. According to HearingTracker, the two companies agreed not to renew a partnership they announced in September 2022, just before the FDA's OTC rule took effect. WS Audiology said it plans to stay in the OTC market under a different name. HearingTracker also reported that existing Sony customers keep warranty and service support. We have not verified current stock anywhere, so treat this page as news about a product line, not a shopping guide.

The bigger picture for OTC buyers

Sony is not the first better-than-basic OTC brand to step back. HearingTracker lists the Sennheiser Conversation Clear Plus, the Jabra Enhance Plus and the Nuheara IQbuds2 as other discontinued OTC products. It also cites a survey by Abram Bailey, AuD, that found an average OTC price of $502 per pair. Our reading is that a polished product with strong app support is hard to sustain at that price. That is our interpretation, not a statement from the companies. The practical lesson is to look at who will stand behind a device after the sale.

What to do if you already own a Sony aid

First, keep your receipt and your model name, and keep the Hearing Control app on your phone. Second, contact the seller or Sony support if anything stops working, because the warranty reporting points there first. Third, ask how long the app will receive updates, since nothing we read answers that. Fourth, if you want your hearing checked, we can test it. We can also look at aids bought elsewhere, but some devices are locked to the maker's software, so we cannot adjust every model. Call before you come and tell us the model. Our page on [Costco hearing aids versus audiologist care](/costco-hearing-aids-vs-audiologist-care) explains how support differs by where you buy.

What to check before you buy any OTC aid

The FDA says OTC hearing aids are for adults who perceive mild to moderate hearing loss. You can buy one without an exam. The box must state the return policy or say that there is none, and the FDA does not require a warranty. So the return window and the support route matter more than the feature list. The table below sets the FDA's description of OTC and prescription aids side by side. When to see someone before you buy

The FDA lists signs that mean you should see a doctor, ideally an ear, nose and throat doctor, before choosing any hearing aid. They include ear pain or drainage, a lot of earwax, severe dizziness, a sudden change in hearing in the past six months, hearing that goes up and down, hearing that is worse in one ear and ringing in only one ear. A sudden loss is an emergency. Read [why you should not wait on sudden hearing loss](/sudden-hearing-loss-why-not-wait) and our page on [dizziness and ringing in your ears](/dizziness-and-ringing-in-your-ears). People under 18 need a prescription aid and a medical visit.

Common questions

Did Sony stop selling hearing aids?

Sony's U.S. site lists its three OTC hearing aids as no longer available, and Sony and WS Audiology agreed not to renew their partnership. WS Audiology said it plans to stay in OTC under another name.

Will my Sony hearing aid still be supported?

HearingTracker reports that existing customers keep warranty and service support. Contact the seller or Sony first, and keep your receipt and the Hearing Control app.

Can Audiology Associates of Westchester adjust an aid I bought elsewhere?

Sometimes. Some aids are locked to the maker's software, so we cannot adjust every model. Call us with the model name before you book.

Are OTC hearing aids good for everyone?

No. The FDA describes them as devices for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. It lists symptoms that mean you should see a doctor first, and people under 18 need a prescription aid.

Should I buy a different OTC aid now?

A hearing test can help you decide. It shows how much loss you have and in which ear. We do not recommend one brand before testing.

Does the Sony news mean OTC hearing aids are going away?

No. The OTC category is still law. Some higher-end models have been discontinued, and WS Audiology says it plans to stay in OTC.
