How Many Hours a Day Should You Wear New Hearing Aids?

Adult adjusting a hearing aid comfortably at home

Most new hearing-aid users do best by wearing their devices consistently during waking hours, following the plan set by their audiologist. Your brain needs real-world sound exposure to adapt to changes in clarity and amplification.

At first, ordinary sounds may seem unusually sharp, busy, or present. Your own voice, running water, paper, dishes, and traffic can stand out. That adjustment is common, but pain, harsh sound, feedback, or headaches are reasons to call rather than simply pushing through.

Begin in familiar settings, practice putting devices in and taking them out, and make notes about the situations that feel most successful or difficult. Those notes make follow-up programming more useful.

Do not compare your experience to someone else’s timeline. Hearing loss, device settings, listening demands, and prior sound exposure are different for every patient.
