Understanding Dry, Itchy Ears

Dry or itchy ears are common, but the cause is not always simply ‘not enough wax.’ Skin conditions, irritation from products, allergies, earbuds, hearing aids, frequent cleaning, and infection can all play a role.

Avoid putting cotton swabs, oils, or objects deeply into the ear canal. They can push wax further in, scratch delicate skin, or make an underlying problem harder to identify.

If you wear hearing aids or earbuds, regular cleaning and fit checks matter. A device that traps moisture or rubs the skin can contribute to irritation, and the solution may be as simple as a cleaning routine or fit adjustment.

Ear pain, drainage, swelling, hearing changes, fever, or persistent itching need medical assessment. An ear inspection can distinguish wax, skin irritation, infection, and other causes.
