Audiologist explaining hearing test results to a patient

A hearing test can cost anywhere from nothing to a few hundred dollars. That is a broad estimate as of October 2026, not our price list. The range is wide because "hearing test" can mean a quick screening at a store or a full diagnostic exam with a Doctor of Audiology.

The two are not the same. A screening tells you whether you may have a problem. A full test shows the type and level of your hearing loss, how well you understand speech, and whether something medical, such as wax or fluid, is involved. Call our Harrison office at (914) 949-0034 or our Somers office at (914) 556-6720 to ask what applies to you.

“A screening tells you whether you may have a problem. A full test shows what the problem is.”

Screening or full test

A screening is short and usually checks whether you hear a few tones at set levels. Retail hearing centers and some events offer them at no charge, often linked to a hearing aid consultation. Online tests are also screenings. They can point to a need for follow-up. They do not replace a full exam.

What a full hearing test includes

A full test usually starts with a case history and a look in your ears. It often includes tests of the middle ear, tones in each ear through earphones and through a bone oscillator, and speech testing. Your audiologist explains the results on a chart called an audiogram, and tells you what the results mean for your daily life. Plan on 30 to 60 minutes. The result also gives you a baseline to compare against in later years.

Parts of a full hearing test and what each one shows
Part of the testWhat it shows
Case historyYour symptoms, noise exposure, medicines and health factors
Ear inspectionWax, blockage or signs of infection in the ear canal
Middle-ear testHow well the eardrum and middle ear work
Tone test through earphonesThe softest sounds you hear in each ear
Tone test through a bone oscillatorWhether the loss is in the outer, middle or inner ear
Speech testingHow well you understand words, in quiet and sometimes in noise

What affects the cost

Cost depends on how much testing you need, the type of practice, and how your insurance treats the visit. A first full exam usually costs more than a repeat test. Some practices include a hearing test in the price of hearing aids. Others bill it on its own. Ask what is included, and whether the test fee is credited toward hearing aids if you buy them.

What insurance may cover

Original Medicare does not cover routine hearing exams for fitting hearing aids. It can cover a diagnostic hearing or balance exam when your doctor orders it to find out whether you need medical treatment. Many Medicare Advantage plans include a hearing exam. Employer and private plans vary. New York Medicaid may cover a medically necessary exam, with rules that depend on your plan. Our insurance guide explains each plan type in plain words.

How to find out your cost before you book

Call your plan and ask whether a diagnostic hearing test is covered, and whether you need a referral. Then call us with your plan name, and ask what your cost will be. Tell us if you have noticed sudden hearing loss, one-sided hearing loss, dizziness, drainage or ear pain. Those signs need prompt medical care, and we will help you find the right visit.
