Signia MaX vs Signia IX: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

If you wear Signia IX, this is the question you arrived with, so here is the answer first: most IX wearers should stay put, and we will say so in the room rather than let you discover it after paying.

What changed. IX handled a noisy room with one processing stream trained to lift conversation out of the background. MaX divides that work between four networks — one deciding whether speech is present, one recognising the wearer's own voice, one reading the acoustics of the space, one managing what is left. Signia badges the combination Acoustic Intelligence. Two practical consequences follow. Own-voice setup no longer needs a calibration step during your appointment, which removes a small piece of friction on fitting day. And telecoil sits in the standard device rather than in a particular variant, so nobody has to give something up to get loop access.

What IX still does better, and it is not a short list. Styles first: IX is made as a custom in-the-ear shell, an instant-fit device, a slim behind-the-ear, a powerful behind-the-ear, an earbud-shaped aid, and a CROS fitting for hearing lost on one side. MaX is one receiver-in-canal model. If your ears, your dexterity or your degree of loss call for any of those forms, MaX cannot be fitted to you at all. Second, evidence: IX has been measured by an outside laboratory and scored well, with one model landing in the top five per cent of everything that laboratory has tested. Nobody has measured MaX. Third, tinnitus. IX carries Signia's notch therapy and its static and ocean-wave relief signals as standard equipment, and no MaX launch material mentions tinnitus anywhere. We expect it carries over. Expecting is not knowing.

IX has not been withdrawn. Signia still catalogues the range and released a new IX model in July 2026, a month before announcing MaX. Repairs, firmware, receivers and accessories continue. Nothing you own is about to be stranded.

Who should move. If a hearing loop is how you follow a service, a lecture or a performance and your IX device does not have a telecoil, MaX puts one in the standard aid — that alone can settle it. If your own voice never sounded right through IX, the new own-voice handling is aimed squarely at that complaint. And if you are buying Signia for the first time, want a receiver-in-canal aid, and are comfortable being early, MaX is a reasonable choice.

Who should not. If your IX aids are verified, adjusted and working, we would leave them alone. If you need a custom, instant-fit, slim, powerful or CROS fitting, the question does not arise. And if you want the best-evidenced Signia rather than the newest, that is IX today and will be for some months yet.

The part that matters more than either platform. Manufacturer default settings routinely fall short of prescriptive targets, which is how a carefully verified mid-range aid ends up outperforming an unverified premium one. If your IX aids were never checked that way, that is a likelier explanation for any disappointment than the generation of the chip inside them, and it costs far less to put right.
