Phonak EON vs Phonak Infinio: Should You Upgrade?

The short answer, before the detail: if your Infinio aids are verified and working, stay where you are. That is not caution for its own sake — it follows from what Phonak itself has and has not claimed.

What actually changed is the processor. Infinio Sphere carried two chips, the second doing nothing but running the neural network that separates voices from noise. EON does that work on one, called HYPERSONIC, and the efficiency saving turns into a shell Phonak puts at 25 per cent smaller and 20 per cent lighter, drawing 37 per cent less current. Around it, the speech network moves up a version and a new wind-noise feature is added. Auracast broadcast audio arrives and works from day one, joined by scanning a code in the app. RogerDirect, Bluetooth Classic and LE Audio all carry across, so a Roger microphone you already own pairs to the new aids.

What Phonak is careful not to say. Comb the launch material and you will not find an assertion that the new platform resolves speech in noise more effectively than the outgoing one. Coming from a manufacturer whose reputation for two years has rested on that exact metric, the omission is conspicuous. The single most quoted line — that wearers are twice as likely to catch every word from any direction — carries a reference, and the reference is a Phonak study from 2024 about the previous platform's version of the feature, comparing it against the same aid with the feature switched off. If you own an Infinio Sphere, that sentence describes something you have had for two years.

So the upgrade case is about the device, not the sound: smaller, lighter, longer between charges when the network is working hard, and broadcast audio that functions rather than being promised. Those are real. They may or may not be worth several thousand dollars to you.

What Infinio still does better. Forms, first. Three EON models exist and all three are worn behind the ear. Infinio adds a rechargeable device built to a scan of the ear itself, and titanium shells seated deep enough in the canal that most people never notice them. Where handling a fine wire is hard, or spectacles and ear defenders are daily wear, nothing in the EON range substitutes. Evidence: Infinio Ultra has been through an outside laboratory and came away with a grade A at 4.9 out of 5, second in its class of thirty-six prescription devices. EON has been measured by nobody. And price: superseded flagships get discounted, which is straightforwardly in your favour.

Who should move. Anyone for whom Auracast is not theoretical — a venue you attend has installed it. Anyone whose aids spend time in a drawer because of their size or weight, since consistency of wear predicts outcome better than nearly anything we can measure. Anyone still wearing Lumity or older, for whom any current platform is a real step. And anyone previously priced out of the speech network, because EON runs it at a third performance level where it used to stop after the top two.

The number that outranks all of this. In that same laboratory report, Infinio Ultra scored 3.1 out of 5 for speech in noise on Phonak's own default settings, and 5.0 after a clinician had adjusted it. Thirty-six devices average 1.96. Adjustment moved the aid further than the entire distance between an ordinary device and a good one, on identical hardware. If your Infinio fitting was never measured in your ear canal, that is where the missing performance is, and finding it costs a fraction of a new pair.
